What is the NRC?
The National Reading Coalition (NRC) is a coordinating structure where all reading initiatives and
#READINGREVOLUTION The NRC was establishedby the National Education Collaboration Trust (NECT) and the Department of
interested stakeholders can come together to share knowledge and successfullearning experiences.
Basic Education (DBE) as a comprehensive national response to the reading challenges facing South
Africa. The NRC is coordinating the development and implementation of a comprehensive national
reading improvement strategy. The NRC functions as an agile, self-sustaining network of reading
initiatives.
Why the Call to Action?
In his State of the Nation Address (SONA) thePresident committed the nation to improving the levels of
reading among young people.Futhermore, he challenged the nation to start a reading revolution that
would increase the number of South African who read for pleasure. The National Reading Coalition has
heeded the President’s call to join the reading revolution andto improve reading among young people.
