Lean (adapted from ‘lean’
manufacturing)
The objective of lean development is to eliminate waste. The old
method of software development focused on determining and
documenting in very fine detail exactly what the customer
requirements and deliverables were. This was often a waste of
time and money because the customer may not know what they
want exactly, or they may not know what they can have, and
change their minds when they find out, or the requirements might
change as the product is being developed. With lean development,
the focus is on delivering value. It is accepted that a product may
never be perfect, or even finished. The focus is on delivering things
that work in delivering some value. The idea is to decide as late as
possible what is needed and then deliver it as quickly as possible so
that you remain aligned with the need. Lean development works
best with empowered teams.
