“Well, afraid of anything, you silly boy!” said the bird. “The world might come to an end, or
the sun might stop shining. It would get very cold and dark, and everything would freeze.
Or maybe the ocean will dry up overnight, and all the trees will die! Can’t you feel it?”
“No!” exclaimed Carl.
“Just use your imagination, boy! Use your imagination!” shouted the bird.
But Carl just sat there.
“Oh, never mind,” said the parrot. “You’re hopeless. Just listen to me and go back into the
jungle like I tell you. You’re not safe here.” Then the parrot flew away.
As he flew away, he issued one last warning to Carl, “Mark my words, boy, if you stay here,
you will regret it.” And a moment later, the old bird was gone.
