Supporting a Life with Dignity
Kennedy was born with lymphatic malformation—a mass of fluid-filled channels around her mouth and
jaw, causing swelling
and enlargement of soft tissue and bones. To help her breathe, she had a tracheostomy when she was six months old, and then spent much of her childhood going to doctors and enduring multiple surgeries. Finding the right kind of home health care for her—and the right person to provide it—was crucial to keep Kennedy safe and to bring a sense of normalcy to her and
her family.
Enter Rachel Gotshall, RN. Rachel’s
most important role was to take care
of Kennedy’s medical needs, but she became much more than her nurse;
she became her friend. She wanted Kennedy to feel as normal as possible— to fit in—but to also stand up for herself when kids were less than nice about her appearance. Rachel gave her the confidence to try new things and
to not let her diagnosis hold her back from living her best life. It’s a testament to Rachel’s tremendous compassion, as well as her clinical skills, that Kennedy grew into an outgoing teenager, meeting extraordinary challenges to live the normal life that she and her family always hoped she could. She even went to Stockton University to play volleyball!
