Understanding what it means to be a nonprofit
Like any business, a nonprofit has to cover operating expenses. To pay employee salaries, invest in technology, develop new solutions, and expand and grow, a nonprofit needs to generate revenue to offset costs. To exist for the long haul, as a nonprofit we must generate revenue that exceeds the amount of our expenses, resulting in a profit. How we generate that profit matters tremendously. As a nonprofit, we are exempt from paying taxes on profits we earn because all our activities are tied to our stated purpose.
