Our roads are for the most part straight & pothole free.
With the exception of Grand AVE. Grand AVE runs
diagonal through the entire city and has a railroad that
runs parallel to it. So intersections of Grand can be
confusing because you actually have 3 streets coming
together at the same intersection. Locals always stay off
                                                                 Grand at all costs!

       Chapter 8

Getting Around Phoenix: The “Grid System”

Getting around Phoenix is one of the best parts about
living here. The roads are all laid out in a nice 90 degree
grid system, with the expiation of one road that we will
       get to in a minute.

Phoenix is divided into east and west which is
separated by Central AVE. Central runs north and south
right through downtown and the middle of Phoenix.
Anything to the west of Central are the “avenues”
Anything east of Central are the “streets” So going west Chapter 9
from Central AVE, you have 1st Ave, 2nd Ave, 3rd Ave About Downtown Phoenix
and so on. Going east you have 1st ST, 2nd ST, 3rd ST and
so on. So just remember Avenues are west and Streets are There really wasn’t much to do around downtown
east. Then the roads running east & west are the same Phoenix until the 2000’s. Before that there was the Suns
almost throughout the entire valley. So from the I-10 Arena, and then Bank One Ballpark (The BOB) was built
going north, you have McDowell, Thomas, Indian School, in 1998. There were a handful of bars and restaurants by
Camelback, and so on going north. So if someone said the ballpark, but for the most part there just weren’t many
meet me at the corner of McDowell and 48th ST, you reasons to go downtown. Around the same time the
would know it’s east of Central because it’s a “street.” If Arizona Center was built. It brought more restaurants and
someone said meet me at 48th AVE and McDowell, you a Hooters downtown which is still there.
would know it’s on the west side because it’s an Avenue.
Once you get used to the name of the east & west roads it Fast forward to 2019. Now there are eateries everywhere,
becomes very easy to find anywhere in this big city. There eclectic shops and bars, concerts and more. Downtown
are like anything, exceptions. For example, the city of Phoenix has really come into its own in the past 19 years.
Tempe has their own road system & doesn’t really follow Also be sure to catch 1st Friday in the Roosevelt
the Phoenix grid system. Same with some outsmarting District on the 1st Friday of every month. Here you will
areas like Chandler & Gilbert. But for the vast majority of see artists, and street performers bring their best stuff. It’s
the city, if you know the grid system you can easily definitely worth checking out!
       get around!
