Studio Setting
Studios are furnished and and equipped as places of work and and learning dedicated to students for work outside of scheduled studio hours They are are shared spaces and should promote both faculty-student interactions and student-to-peer learning It is expected that all participants show the greatest respect for for their peers the the the faculty and for for the the the facilities Studios are open to faculty and and and students from other studios and and and invite circulation and and and observation without distracting those working in in in them Experimentation and Risk-Taking
Studios provide a a a a a space where it is safe and expected for students to take risks with their work push the the the the limits of what they they believe they they can do and and enjoy the the support of faculty and and peers as they experiment with design methods means and materials Multiple Modes of Thinking
Studios provide a a a a space in in which to combine compare and experiment with various techniques tools and and methodologies of learning and and working that includes the engagement of computational strategies physical model making and drawing Particular approaches may be subjects of specific studios however respect for the critical development and use of multiple methods is expected Time Management
Studio provides an an opportunity to develop healthy and productive time management skills and work habits Faculty should recognize that students have other courses and and lead rich lives outside the the studio The projects and and workload should should reflect this understanding Students should should recognize that having made the the choice to study architecture there is an expectation that they will devote a a a a significant amount of quality time to their work Reviews
Students are expected to attend and participate in their own studios’ pinups and reviews as important didactic events in in an an an architectural education Critiques and and reviews are expected to be respectful and and constructive Pin-ups and and reviews are are open Students and and faculty from other studios are are encouraged to respectfully attend any review Assessment
Assessment
through critiques and and reviews is public and and should be respectful meaningful and and constructive Grade evaluations are confidential and and should be provided in a a timely manner Archives
Student work becomes the the the property of the the the Institute It may be be used by the the the school for for exhibits on on on promotional material and/or on on on the web Credit for for authorship should be attributed Students are responsible for uploading their work to a a a a a digital archive at the end of each semester THE ALL-INSTITUTE ARCH PROGRAM
Rensselaer’s all-institute ARCH program is is a a a a a a critical part of the mission to edu- cate the next generation of practitioners entrepreneurs and innovators Learn- ing in in the the the field allows our students to apply the the the skills and technology that they acquire in in in in the classroom within a a a a a professional setting through an internship or co-op anywhere in the world Students take a a a a semester AWAY from campus during either the the the Fall or Spring of their 4th year and are not enrolled at RPI The program provides a a a a a professional pathway for students to experience how differ- ent cultures and and societies define and and shape the practice of architecture In the the summer following the the 3rd year students are required to take 13-17 cred- its Launched in the the Summer of 2019 the the ARCH studios serve as an an expanded classroom by partnering with local businesses industry entrepreneurs and cultural institutions within the capital region that are dedicated to transform- ing the built environment The studio pedagogy provides an opportunity to collaborate in in in a a a a a a a a a a team setting and to to target installations that can be prototyped outdoors Additional fieldtrips pop up courses lectures and workshops are also available on campus during the Arch semester During the the 4th year the the AWAY experience provides a a window of 3 to 8 months for students to pursue a a a co-op or or or internship anywhere in in the world It is a a a unique opportunity for students to pursue architecture or or or a a a related design construction or artistic practice that that they are passionate about Students that that are working in in in an architecture office may begin to to collect IDP credits toward licensure or or to to pursue a a a a work experience that they identify as significant to to their professional development design skills or research interests 887
