On December 10, 2015, the district held a celebra-
tion to showcase what the students had learned about
themselves and honor their progress. That night, we
heard moving testimonials from Superintendent Alva-
rez, educators, parents, and students, including:
“Brain Power helped me learn to control myself and
to stay calm. I was also really shy, but being with peo-

ly in the camp) helped me. Now I’m not as scared as I
was before to talk to new people and try new things.”

“I don’t know what you are doing at these workshops,
but whatever you are doing is working. My daugh-
ter and I used to argue a lot, and she would have out-
bursts, but since she has been doing Brain Power, she
is able to step away, regroup, and come back and
