BRECON RFC
WHERE ARE WE NOW
AND WHAT DOES THE
FUTURE HOLD?
In 2008 Brecon RFC set about trying to put together a Development Structure with future aims and a pathway towards achieving those aims. Within 10 years (by 2018) the Develop- ers of the Plan set the Club the following goals:-
• Club of Choice in Heart of Wales
• Division 1 Status
• Successful 2nd XV providing a minimum of 2 players to 1st XV per year
• Strongest Youth Team in region with 3 players progressing to 1st XV per year
• Strongest U8 - U16 teams in region
• Floodlit pitches and matches
• Fitness suite suitable for squad and individual training
• Division 1 standard playing surface
• Regional player development pathway
To a large extent many of the stated aims have been achieved.
• Brecon are certainly one of the premier Clubs in the Heart of Wales.
• Division 1 status has been achieved following the 1st XV’s deserved promotion at the
end of last season.
• The 2nd XV won the Rhondda and East Glamorgan Cup in an outstanding match against
Mountain Ash and three of that victorious side, Deri Williams, Richie Elliott and Mitch
Collacott, have featured regularly with the 1st VX this season.
• The Youth XV had an outstanding season, finishing second in their league after losing just
one league match to eventual winners Mountain Ash. After claiming victory in the return match the league title hinged on points difference and matches played and with the final match of the season being cancelled the Youth team were denied the opportunity of being outright winners. Since then three of that successful team have gone on to represent the 1st XV. Lewys Powell and Huw Prothero have featured occasionally with 1st and 2nd XV’s while Andrew Hosie has appeared in every 1st XV match and has twice won Man of the Match Awards.
• The Mini and Junior teams have established themselves as one of best organised and consistently successful sections of any club in the area.
• In 2011 full floodlighting was installed on our main pitch and last season the floodlighting of the second pitch was completed.
• The playing surface has been regularly maintained and improved, much of that thanks to the efforts of Norman Williams. It is now one of the best pitches that we play on and is certainly up to Division 1 standard.
• The club has continued to support Player Development through the Development
Pathway and a number of our players have gone on to achieve success at a higher level. Callum James is the present captain of the Blues Under 16 Regional side and continues to regularly play for both our Under 16s and Youth Teams. Lewis Smoutt is playing with Cardiff and Darren Harris has left Llanelli for a professional contract at Rotherham. Alwyn Lee has unfortunately been ruled out of the season with Bedwas because of injury but Sam Hobbs continues his successful career at the Blues. In addition former players Osian Davies, Tom Daley, Ewan Williams and Cameron Gardner continue to feature regularly in the successful Merthyr team captained by Andy Powell as they drive towards promotion to the Premiership. >
