The Vice Presidents of Brecon Rugby Club have been variously described as the intellectual illuminati of the Watton, a secret society feared throughout South Breconshire, or as a middle aged (cough) group of wisdom-seekers keeping warm and sipping halves of Doombar in the front of an open (gas) fire in the club’s cubby-hole. The truth is something in-between these extremes, although it has to be admitted that the Vice Presidents appear to have little to do with vice, but laughter and fun is certainly dispersed with occasional wisdom, with the big emphasis being on enjoying each other’s the company
and in celebrating the success of all our teams on the playing field.
The Vice Presidents fees are used for the development of the infrastructure of Brecon RFC. This season VPs voted to purchase a top-of-the-range high definition TV projector and screen for the function room in time for the World Cup. The VPs are already planning on how they can help the club next season.
The promotion of the first team to Division One East was a leap into the unknown for many
of us, and a bit of a shock as powerful teams graced Parc de Pugh, denying our backs the try fest enjoyed last season. Nevertheless, as the first team has found its feet and became more accustomed to playing at this higher level, nerves have been settled. The VPs are not, however, fixated on the first-team. News about the performances by every Brecon RFC team (including the Seconds, the Youth and the juniors) are eagerly awaited in the ‘VP lounge’.
The VPs value the communications they have across the club. We are very fortunate in having a great representative of the VP’s on the club committee in Phil Buck and he ensures that the views of VPs are fed through to the top. The Club Coach and Club Chairman meet the VPs
at every home match and as one would expect, there are frank exchanges about tactics and substitutions before important decisions are made on whose round it is.
On the 6th November the Vice Presidents held a formal dinner with Kingsley Jones as our special guest. It was a very successful night and we are planning another next year. Do let me know if you have an idea for speaker. Apart from Kingsley, recent speakers have included
Mark Regan and Doddie Weir.
The role of the VPs in broadcasting is easily forgotten. The BBC (Brecon Broadcasting Corporation) section of the VPs is very active, with cinematography, still photography and announcements (Viv, we will be turning on the microphone before long when you have passed your probation) being delivered by VPs. The Try of the Season event, held on May 15th last year, with guests Ian Gough and Gary Halpin, was enjoyed by all, including the players
– eager to see who got the awards - who attended in usually high numbers!
The VPs Man of the Match award is made after every First Team home fixture, with the prize being donated by one of the VPs. The selection of the MOM, in common with the European Song Contest, involves the most serious of deliberations (two minutes usually does it), but it
is great to meet the winner - and we presume - for them to meet the illuminati.
The future? Well, that’s up to the VPs. The Vice Presidents warmly welcomes new members. Come and join the fun!
