Kington’s burgeoning arts scene is celebrated with the Marches Makers Festival in May, showcasing work from established and emerging artists or peruse the Made in the Marches gallery and the regular Arts Markets held in the clock tower hall.
Hergest Croft Gardens, owned by RHS veterans Lawrence and Elizabeth Banks, has over 70 acres of gardens with over 5000 rare trees and shrubs, considered to be one of the finest collections in the British Isles. Kington is an area that attracts and inspires artisans and musicians, it’s where Mike Oldfield drew inspiration for the magical Tubular Bells album and where pop star Ellie Goulding grew up.
Mortimer Country
A land of historical political intrigue and the site of the famous Battle of Mortimers Cross, which is re-enacted every year, Mortimer Country holds the deep secrets and violent clashes of the Mortimer Marcher Lords, The Harleys of Brampton Bryan and the Croft family of Croft Castle.
Once a glacial lake, Wigmore Basin can be seen from the ruins of Wigmore Castle and the nearby Abbey. Discover the history, legends and castles when you take the Mortimer Trail, with its ancient hamlets and villages that were once thriving townships, dense forests and woods and atmospheric buildings, reaching up to the south Shropshire border.
