Ken Williams of Tesco’s undertook his elementary food hygiene exam while attending the fishmonger assessment programme at Billingsgate in May. Thishan Rajendram (Tish’s Fish) and Julia Noone (Swanage Bay Fish) sat their elementary health and safety exams while at the same event. All had studied on line and their exams were a “bolt-on” to their fishmonger programmes.

Fishing News Awards 2018
The Fishing News Awards 2018 programme shines a spotlight on achievements, expertise and innovation from within the UK and Ireland’s commercial fishing industries during 2017.
The gala awards evening took place on the evening of 24th May 2018 in Aberdeen, with the proceedings hosted by acclaimed comedian Fred MacAulay. Congratulations to Federation members Flatfish Ltd of Grimsby & Fresh from the Boat based in Emsworth, Hampshire.
Processor of the Year
Winners in 2016, Flatfish is a family company, founded in 1979, operating from a stall on the Grimsby Pontoon, that now occupies a purpose-built factory, with automated grading and filleting equipment capable of producing 17,000 flatfish fillets per hour at full capacity. Heavy investment in both people and the latest technology has built a processing facility that enables the company to showcase to the major retailers the highest quality fish sourced from the UK fishing fleet. Flatfish is totally committed to upholding the integrity of the supply chain, whether by way of its input as a Processing Panel member at Seafish, its involvement in the Responsible Fishing Scheme, or advocacy of MSC certification across the industry.
Independent Fresh Retailer of the Year
Fresh from the Boat provides local people and local businesses with locally-caught fish and shellfish. Run by Peter and Chantelle Williams, each day’s catch comes from local boats, including Peter’s own boat, the Sarah C SE 121. The catch is displayed on the company website, and delivered to customers by Chantelle.
A weekly whole fish fish-box service is particularly popular with customers, as is the work put in by Chantelle to educate people on preparation and how to best cook fish.
“As I’ve said before our goal was to not be the ghosts of the sea, we wanted to sell our catch to local people! Over the last few years we’ve grown strength to strength and this wouldn’t of been possible without our community who have stood strong and propped us up in some of the toughest of times, catching your own fish and selling it is not the easiest of things. To win this award is absolutely amazing and without our amazing community and the fantastic support within the Fishing industry this award wouldn’t of been possible. I’m so proud and honoured to get this award!” Chantelle Williams
