Pendine Tourism Attractor Project86
Underway in Carmarthenshire is the Pendine Tourism Attractor project; a major £7+million scheme that aims to transform the resort into a ‘day and stay’ year round event destination. Construction commenced on the project in January 2019 and is due for completion in late 2020. The project includes:
• A Sands of Speed museum dedicated to Pendine’s historic association with land speed, with interactive zones and exhibition space to house racing cars and land speed memorabilia.
• An eco-friendly 42 bed hostel which will include a coffee/bistro bar
• An events area
• An exhibition esplanade
• Dune Gardens & Adventure Playground
• Beach Sports Area
• Enhanced destination Car park
• Overnight motor-home site
With new tourism focused projects such as this in Carmarthenshire, skills needs in hospitality and tourism will become even more prevalent and such a vision as this for Carmarthenshire requires skilled business people who are able to realise the vision, for the benefit of the local economy and to drive further employment in the region.
Pembrokeshire Food Park87
Pembrokeshire County Council, the Welsh Government and private sector stakeholders are working to create a multi-million pound food park to the North of Haverfordwest, which will include food production and food storage facilities. The expected benefits are the proposed creation of 1,000 new jobs, increased competitiveness of local food producers in the global market, the provision of a modern distribution hub with renewable energy infrastructure and the creation of a practical research and educational base to ensure sustainable future growth for years to come.
Skills in food production and in transport will be in demand as a result of this project and the RLSP and its stakeholders will need to work closely to identify the range of skills needs and to ascertain whether relevant courses are offered locally at the appropriate level.
