Apprenticeship Success!
Wellgate Fisheries proprietor and NFF President Giles Shaw is pleased to announce that Henry Devine has successfully completed his Level 2 Fishmonger apprenticeship and achieved a Merit in the end point assessment.
Henry is the first apprentice from a traditional high street fishmonger to complete this new apprenticeship programme, “the first of many in the industry said Giles”. The apprentice was supported in his training by both his employer and Blackpool and the Fylde College who have a long association with apprenticeships and training in the fish and shellfish industry.
Giles is part of the small employer group that with support from Seafish and under the Chairmanship of Andrew Kenny developed the Fishmonger Apprenticeship Standard in 2017. The apprenticeship standard for fishmongers is a particularly challenging one requiring 18-24 months to deliver and generously funded up to £12,000 per apprentice.
“The benefits of apprenticeships are many. For example, they can develop staff so that they have skills directly relevant to a businesses’ unique operations, helping to boost productivity and the quality of output. They can also help attract talent, as advertising a new job role with an apprenticeship attached can encourage a greater number - and higher quality - of applications”
