Fishmonger Apprenticeship Updates
Fishmonger apprenticeships are readily available in Wales (Cambrian Training), Northern Ireland (Southern Regional College) and Scotland (Polaris Learning), and will soon be more available in England following discussions between Seafish and potential apprenticeship providers.
Fishmonger trailblazer apprenticeships in England are proving popular with the major supermarkets, with a fourth multiple retailer about to embark on this programme. A small number of independent fishmongers have apprentices participating in the trailblazer programme with the first (independent) completion expected any day.
Discussions with potential apprenticeship providers able to deliver to the smaller, non-levy paying fishmongers have identified several organisations who are about to announce the launching of their programmes on a regional or England-wide basis. To hear about these announcements please monitor the NFF website or signup to the Seafish Seafood Training Newsletter.

When is HACCP not HACCP?
At the request of the NFF Seafish looked into the potential to develop a model HACCP plan for an independent high street/mobile fishmonger.
Early on in the exercise we concluded that in a well run fishmongers with the necessary policies and procedures in place, a HACCP Plan was not required as there were no uncontrolled hazards. Seafish will be publish a training guide to Food Safety Management in Fishmongers later this year. This does not relieve fishmongers from any of their responsibilities for managing food safety hazards, but does shift the focus from managing problems to a system based on good practices. For more information on this please email onshore@seafish.co.uk
Winter Training Programme for Wales
The Seafood Training Network for Wales will publish its winter training programme soon, including food hygiene and HACCP training courses, fish smoking training and more.
The programme will be available on the Network website, through Network partners and will be in the Seafood Training Newsletter, so sign up for you free subscription today.
