  OBITUARY
John Masters
The Federation are saddened to announce the passing of John Masters. Many of our older members may remember John from his days organising the Craft Competition orwhenheservedasPresidentin 1984- 1986.
“I first met John in the 1960s - an obvious fun-loving character already well known in the “OLD BILLINGSGATE”.
Having finished my mornings buying, time for a cuppa and a slice of toast from the tin shack in the unloading area, not feeling great about the day, thinking if I’m lucky I might take £25 today!
John appeared with a cheerful “Good morning All”. Two of the street market fishmongers were bemoaning the fact they were finding it hard to earn a profit, apparently, they had brought, I believe, Kippers, at 13shillings (65p) a stone.
John remarked in - a serious voice, “Did you earn a Shilling?” A gruff answer in typical market language “Yes John”, “Don’t complain then!” He replied. Standing listening - I thought at least I’m not the only idiot trying to earn buttons!
From that day on, John was my inspiration, listening, watching, John was known to all, I realise now, also a great ambassador for the trade and the Federation, never thinking I would become a member, John introduced me to Sandy Bannerman, Past President 1978/1980 - a fantastic man, Ray Cayless, John Mobbs - a gentleman. These people like John Masters and many others worked so hard in their quiet way for the independent Fishmonger. It was my pleasure to have known them all.
My condolences to the Family, wife Anne, daughter Kim and son Lloyd.”
Rest in Peace old friend.
