Relegation definitely focuses minds and there’s no doubt this season will have a different feel to it. However, following on from the success of last year, our focus has been on how we can improve and hopefully challenge for trophies.
With the league going back to a more traditional home and away format, the structure of the season is far more supporter friendly, this will hopefully encourage more people to engage with the Principality Premiership and enjoy the high quality rugby that the league produces.
Winning is always important, and maybe even more so this year; nevertheless we fully understand and value our role in player development. It’s wonderful to see two former junior drovers in the Scarlets academy and both will play their first season of senior rugby at their home club. I’m sure some of our young players will play in the newly formed Scarlets development team
and this is something that we fully support. It’s great to see Wyn Jones is continuing to excel both on the regional and international stage and young hooker Dafydd Hughes continues his development with the Scarlets and we are confident this year that he will be given more opportunity with the first team.
Unfortunately, last season because of injury, Emyr Phillips was forced to retire. Emyr achieved so much as a player, Welsh caps, Pro 12 Winner, Scarlets Captain and maybe most importantly Welsh Cup winner with the Drovers. In all seriousness, Emyr has been a great ambassador for the club and whenever he was asked to put the drover shirt on, he gave
nothing less than 100%. A true Drover legend!
Maybe the most exciting change for the upcoming season will be the live Premiership TV games that will be shown on the BBC and S4C. It’s great to see the club game having the TV coverage it deserves.
