roadside speakers and with a whoosh and a cheer, the
Bellagio fountains sprung into life. Six-thirty.
“What’s your gift?” There was maturity in that
voice now. And gravitas and presence too. I began to
wonder if I guessed the age right.
Watching the fountains and listening to Billie Jean,
I felt very lucky. My mind drifted back to the moment I
discovered my gift. One day I went for a walk and just
asked myself, ‘what have I really been doing my whole
life?’
A picture flashed through my mind. I was ten years
old and standing in the corridor at school. The teacher
had been trying to explain fractions and nobody got it.
So I piped up and said "Fractions are like pizza slices:
"Imagine a pizza cut into 8 slices. If you eat 2, you've
had 2/8 or 1/4 of the pizza." The teacher made me
stand up. Go and stand in the corridor, Nicky
Boothman, I’ve told you not to do that.
“I make complicated concepts sound simple and
interesting.” I said. “That’s it. It’s behind everything I
do. I use it to write books and give speeches that are
really easy to understand.”
