skirt came towards me with a sense of purpose. Her
dark hair was pulled back into a ponytail, revealing a
smattering of freckles across her cheeks. She dropped
the string bag on the table with a soft clunk. There was
no small talk, no warm smile or friendly greeting. Just
a direct, piercing gaze.
“Julia?” I asked, my voice low.
“Is it possible,” she said, her voice firm but laced
with a hint of desperation, “that I can buy an hour of
your time?” She glanced around the lobby, her eyes
flicking towards the elderly couple sitting at a nearby
table.
“I don’t believe this.” I was still wound-up from
giving my speech.
“You are an expert at helping people, and you do it
very well.” Her voice trembled slightly as she spoke,
betraying her nervousness. Her eyes, a deep shade of
brown, seemed to bore into mine, filled with a mix of
desperation and longing. The look of misery etched on
her face was palpable, but beneath it, I sensed a
glimmer of hope.
“I need some help right now,” she said. Her hand
