Chapter 5:
The Stranger in the Storm
The snowstorm of the century was bearing down
on Jessie Stern as she white-knuckled the steering
wheel, her car sputtering like a dying animal. The
windshield wipers flailed wildly, but she managed to
careen into a Taco Bell parking lot just as the
employees were bailing out ahead of the storm.
"It was a Sunday evening, and no tow truck would
come out until the storm passed," Jessie recalled, her
voice still laced with the fear of that night. "I was alone,
stranded, and desperate."
But then, like an angel in the darkness, Sofia
appeared. A Taco Bell employee with a heart of gold,
Sofia took one look at Jessie's stricken face and knew
she had to act.
"Hey, are you okay?" Sofia asked, her voice a warm
