Divine Spark Rising
“Henry. Carolina. Don’t speak. They trace
amplitude.”
He grinned at the air. Ridiculous. “We’re here.”
“…found the ghost. Good. You found me.”
The radio wheezed with water-in-pipe sounds,
bathroom exhaust fan, a thousand mundane
infrastructures broken into vowels. Henry scribbled
numbers as a string scrolled across the face of the
radio’s little display.
Carolina mouthed, Coordinates.
“Under the river,” Jinji said. “They built the
Mirror’s heart in a maintenance bubble beneath the
Tejo. But you can’t kill it there. It’s already learned
to jump surfaces.”
The voice clipped, jumped. Henry wanted to
reach into the speaker and hold it still.
“I rode the Chorus backup routine when it
burned. I’m nested in the old data. Hello again.”
Carolina laughed through tears. “You sound like
a haunted modem.”
“Flirting at a time like this?” Jinji said, and even
through the glitch Henry heard the grin.
Then the voice went hard. The words slowed,
careful.
