Room for Improvement
One key to improving your communication skills is to
look at the flip side of your strengths. I’m not saying
that you should look at your weaknesses—quite the con-
trary. Look at the weaknesses inherent in your strengths.
It’s usually not your weaknesses that inhibit your ability to
connect, convince, and have fun with all those around
you, but the weaknesses in your strengths. For example,
do any of the following apply to you?
Dreamers: Does your ability to see situations from many
angles make you indecisive? Or could your need for per-
sonal space or lack of concern with personal appearance
give others the wrong first impression? Do you sometimes
say yes when you really mean no?
Analysts: Is your perfectionism making you miss out
on the big-picture opportunities that come your way? Are
you overly critical? Is it possible you push away others by
appearing aloof or distant?
Persuaders: Are you so intent on being entertaining
that you are prone to exaggerate? Do you talk so much
that it drowns out useful feedback? Do you avoid confron-
tation? Do you have difficulty staying focused?
Controllers: Are you so self-assured that you’re becom-
ing a poor listener? Does your impatience make you
argumentative or just plain stubborn? Could that tendency
