Pay Attention—It’s That Simple
In conversation, it’s crucial to give physical and
spoken feedback to maintain the connection.
Show that you understand and are interested using
your body language as well as your voice. The
classic poor schmoozer is the person who never
looks you in the eye—who’s always looking over
your shoulder at parties, hoping for a bigger, better
score, a more important person to talk to. And they
always get caught and resented. Look at, listen to,
and focus on the one you’re with. Fostering and
maintaining a sense of closeness instills feelings of
importance.
Stay curious. You’ll find out what turns people
on and what makes them tick by asking questions,
by staying engaged, by drawing out your partner.
What are their dreams? Now? As a child? What
keeps them awake at night? How much would it
help you to know what keeps your boss awake at
night, or which of your coworkers are ambitious
and which are content?
over and over. Come up with snappy, easy-to-understand
sound bites that make sense and move people.
