elderly clients scattered throughout her neighborhood
whom she and her volun-
teers feed and assist every
day. One day, while she
was walking past an office
building, she saw a dump-
ster full of old computers.
She thought nothing of it.
When she got home, she sat down in the family room and
idly watched her teenager at the family computer sifting
through a screenful of e-mail.
Penny had an epiphany. “It was like a light went on
over my head. I realized that for my daughter, e-mail,
Facebook, and the Internet as a whole were important
pipelines to her friends and to the world. Why couldn’t
they be the same for my elderly clients—most of whom
had never used a computer? If they could learn to use
them, these technologies could dramatically change their
lives by putting them back in touch with the world. And
they didn’t need the newest or the fastest computer
around. I could change their lives if only I could get some
of those corporate computers before they landed in a
dumpster.”
Penny really had no clue how to get started. The first
two corporations she got in touch with said they’d really
