My introduction to the art of making presenta-
tions came, naturally enough, from Francis
Xavier Muldoon in the late 1960s at the Savoy,
London’s finest luxury hotel. One November afternoon I
followed him down a Persian-carpeted hallway to a meet-
ing room.
“Two hundred seats?” Muldoon asked the bellman as
we entered.
“Right, sir. Theater, no podium,” the bellman answered,
and Muldoon peeled off a ten-shilling note.
“Thank you, Peter.”
“But Frank,” I said as Peter walked away, “Don’t you
want me to organize more chairs?”
“Why would that be?” Muldoon replied, walking toward
