Success doesn’t depend solely on how well you do
your job; it also depends on how much you care and how
well you connect with people and deliver your message.
The ability to stand up and present will take your career
and your confidence places you have never imagined.
Mario and Teresa learned that speaking to a group is not
a matter of duty; it’s a matter of passion. Not a matter of
nerves, but a matter of practice.
You can start today and follow Mario’s lead with this
two-step plan.
1. Get involved.
Forgo television, video games, and other pastimes until
you have a new face-to-face commitment that meets at
least weekly—more often is fine—outside the house
with new people in an activity that involves human con-
tact. Take a class, hook up with an amateur theater or
improvisation group, volunteer as a tour guide, man an
information desk, join Toastmasters or a community ser-
vice organization—all these are good options.
2. Stay involved
Attend your face-to-face commitment regularly for three
months. Mario wanted to turn tail and run but he didn’t.
