EXERCISE
Three Attitude-Adjustment Games
Here are three games that will really drive home the point that
a useful attitude makes all the difference.
Mirror Talk
As children we learn “pretend” games. As grown-ups we
abandon this valuable social and cognitive learning tool.
Happily enough, these games are still available to us. We are
fantastic at pretending.
Try this. Stand in front of a mirror and say, “You drive me crazy.”
Now, with as much body language as you can muster up,
and with the appropriate voice tone for each attitude below,
say the same phrase again and pretend you are
1. Angry 2. Brave 3. Happy 4. Humble 5. Calm
Same words—totally different meanings. What did you see,
what did you hear, what did you feel? Now go through the list
of attitudes again, saying, “I’m going home now.”
Evaluate again. Did you notice how your body changed for
each attitude? How your tone of voice altered each time you
changed your attitude? When you adjust your attitude around
other people, they pick up the same feelings you have and
begin to experience them for themselves. How much sense
does it make to be angry or impatient when you want to make a
good first impression? How much better to be excited or warm?
Body Talk
Write down or, better still, remember these five attitudes:
angry, brave, happy, humble, calm. The next time it’s
