work your ABC: attitude, body language, and congruence
convenient, as you walk down a corridor, through a mall, or up
a street, rotate your body language and feelings through these
attitudes. Start off angry—walk, think, breathe, talk to yourself
as if you are angry. After a certain distance, change quickly
from being angry to being brave. After angry becomes brave,
brave becomes happy, happy becomes humble, and humble
becomes calm. The changeover can occur every five offices,
every four stores, every block—it doesn’t matter.
Notice how changing your attitude affects your posture,
breathing, thoughts, facial expressions, heart rate, speed,
stride, and so on. Notice how people passing by respond to
you. If you feel a bit psycho doing this exercise, that’s okay.
But if the security guard throws you out of the mall, you’re
probably taking it further than you need to.
Winner and Loser
Set aside twenty-five minutes. For the first five minutes, act
like a winner. Chest out, proud posture, confident breathing
from the abdomen—imagine crowds on either side cheering
you on as you smile at them. For the next five, act like a loser.
Let your shoulders droop, feel miserable, put on the downcast
eyes and the insecure glower. Next five like a winner again,
then five more like a loser, and the final five like a winner.
Which did you prefer? It helps to know what they both feel
like, but when you’re connecting in business, it goes without
saying, always act like a winner.
