Chapter 6:
The Hunt
The Alleyway.
Evelyn didn't stop. Couldn't stop. Liam was
behind her, his breathing ragged. He wasn't used to
this. The world had been a fog of apathy for so long.
Now, every shadow was a threat, every distant siren a
warning. He stumbled, catching himself, his eyes wide
with a terror that was, absurdly, a sign of his healing.
He felt fear. He felt the urgency.
"Keep moving!" Evelyn gasped, glancing back.
The clinic building was a chaos of flashing lights and
wailing sirens. Police cars, fire trucks. A full-blown
incident. They wouldn't be looking for a doctor and
her patient. They'd be looking for a criminal.
They burst out of the alley onto a main street. It
was late, but not deserted. A few cars sped past. A
couple walked hand-in-hand, oblivious. Evelyn pulled
Liam into the deeper shadows of a closed storefront.
