NICHOLAS BOOTHMAN
She heard shouts from above, the sound of
breaking glass as one of the men tried to follow.
Evelyn didn't wait. She limped down the alley, the
shriek of the fire alarm fading behind her, replaced by
the pounding of her own heart.
She glanced back. A dark figure was silhouetted in
the broken window, looking down at her.
They knew her face. They knew her name.
She was on the run.
And Liam. He was out there too. A newly
awakened man, thrust into a nightmare.
She reached the end of the alley, bursting onto a
deserted side street. She didn't know where she was
going. She just knew she must disappear.
The book, still clutched in her hand, felt heavy, a
burden and a beacon. It held the key to Deep Rest.
And it had just turned her life into a full-blown
thriller.
She heard the distant wail of sirens, growing
closer. Not just the fire department. Police.
They would be looking for her. For Liam.
Evelyn ran, the cold night air biting at her face.
Now she was the hunted.
