NICHOLAS BOOTHMAN
Evelyn knew it was. But she wouldn't go down
without a fight.
She grabbed a heavy metal file box from her shelf.
"Stay back!" she warned, brandishing it like a shield.
The man laughed. "Pathetic."
Just as he raised the taser, a sudden, piercing
SCREEEEECH! ripped through the air.
It was the fire alarm.
Evelyn had forgotten about it. The extinguisher.
The foam. It had triggered the smoke detector.
The shrill wail of the alarm filled the clinic,
deafening, disorienting. Red lights flashed, strobing
through the room.
The men hesitated, their eyes darting to the
ceiling.
"Damn it!" the first man cursed. "The alarm!"
This was her chance.
"Liam! Now!" Evelyn yelled, pointing to the
window.
She swung the file box. This time the glass
shattered.
Cold night air rushed into the room.
"She's escaping!" the second man bellowed,
moving towards the window.
