DEEP REST
She dropped the empty extinguisher. She needed a
key. Or a way to break the lock.
The foam was starting to dissipate. The first man,
his face streaked with white, lunged forward, a dark
shape in his hand. A taser.
Evelyn ducked, rolling under her desk. She
scrambled to her feet on the other side, putting the
heavy desk between her and the men.
"Liam! The window!" she yelled, pointing to the
large, single-pane window overlooking a narrow
alleyway.
He looked at it, then back at the two figures,
clearing the foam from their eyes. "It's too high! And
it's locked!"
"Break it!" Evelyn grabbed a heavy paperweight
from her desk. "Use this!" She threw it to him.
Liam caught it, his hands shaking. He looked at
the window, then at the men. The process had
awakened something in him. The will to survive.
He swung the paperweight, hitting the glass with a
sharp CRACK! The pane spiderwebbed, but didn't
shatter.
"Idiots," the first man sneered, now fully visible.
He held the taser, its twin prongs extended. "It's over,
Doctor."
