What Are You Waiting For?
From time to time I'd get invited to give a talk about
being a fashion photographer. In June 1994 I was invited
to speak at the North York Camera Club in Toronto.
North York is a pretty affluent neighborhood and I
accepted. I imagined the audience would be dentists and
lawyers dressed up like Rambo in fishing vests stuffed
with lenses and film packs with cameras around their
necks and tripods slung over their shoulders like
portable rocket-launchers. I wasn't far wrong. I figured
they'd probably read every magazine and book about
photography and probably owned more equipment than
most professionals. Again, pretty close.
"How can I make this event interesting?" I wondered.
"I know, I'll talk for five minutes about photography and
fifty-five minutes about connecting with people." When I
finished, three people came up to me: a doctor, a teacher,
and someone who teaches people-skills to airline
