Fate? Or just good luck?
On the inside, the big old 1870’s wooden peg-barn on
the farm where I live, looks like a bootlegged medieval
cathedral. It's over sixty feet from stable to gable and it
has appeared in movie and fashion shoots, country music
specials and music videos.
On the third Saturday in October of 1998, ten days
after I finished the first draft, our grand old barn hosted
an exhibition of historic quilts. This has been planned
almost a year earlier. The highlight of the event is a
collection made from the clothing of one of the greatest
storytellers in recent history––Lucy Maud Montgomery,
the author of the international classic Anne of Green
Gables.
Over three hundred people showed up. By seven-
fifteen, the last visitors are gone, and we are shutting
down and locking up. A car carrying four passengers
crunches up the gravel driveway and stops in the
121
