     SPONTANEOUS SUCCESS
"Twenty-nine bucks a head," I told them, "and bring
your friends." Over eighty people showed up. I was
buzzed. Now I was a professional speaker—but it was
going nowhere, and because I'd pushed my photography
aside, my income had taken a nosedive.
What was missing? I researched what makes other
speakers successful, and it hit me like a champagne cork.
A book! And preferably a best-seller with a killer title.
Later that night, I made a deal with myself. I had to
write 1500 words a day before I could get dressed. For
the next five weeks, I wrote with a vengeance and
completed the first draft of How to Make People Like
You in 90 Seconds or Less, a book with a purpose. To
make complicated concepts sound simple and
interesting.
