driven out from Toronto and got lost—this is before
GPS. We turn the lights back on and give them a quick
tour.
As the evening wound down, we invited them to join
us for a glass of wine. To our surprise, one of the group
turns out to be the president of a famous Canadian
publishing house. The woman, her eyes sharp, her voice
carrying the weight of authority. The president of a
publishing house. Fate? Or just damn good luck?
Before saying goodbye, this gracious lady extends an
invitation for me to visit her office the following week.
There, she offers invaluable advice, urging me to seek
representation from a reputable agent in New York.
With her guidance and a stroke of luck, I embark on a
journey that leads me to a six-figure advance from a
major publishing house a mere three weeks later.
At first, these surprise twists and turns are mind-
