translator at the United Nations. From there it was just
one great thing leading to another.
"Today, I amplify the voices of those who need to be
heard.”
The hum of the engines changed as the Boeing 767
began its long descent, pulling my attention to the
window. With Portugal rushing up to meet us, I turned
to Francesca.
"Whatever became of Tomaz's daughter?" I asked.
"Lara."
"Lara," Francesca repeated softly, her gaze drifting to
the clouds. "She married a sculptor, a wonderful man
named Declan Quinn. They moved to Ireland, and she
was so happy." A shadow passed over her face as the
pristine golden beaches and glistening turquoise waters
of the Algarve appeared below us, a stunning, sun-
drenched paradise that seemed a world away from the
story she was telling. "She was pregnant when Declan
was killed. A police chase… it was just so tragic."
The plane banked, and the idyllic coastline gave way
to the sparkling high-rise buildings of Faro. Francesca's
tone shifted with the view, a quiet pride replacing the
sadness. "But she came back to Lavanda with her little
