Chapter 13: Porto
Porto glistened in the morning haze, its iron
bridges and ochre rooftops draped over the Douro
River like a city caught mid-sigh. From the moment
they arrived, Henry felt it. An unfamiliar tension in
the rhythm of the place, like something winding
too tight.
“Where exactly does he live?” Carolina asked.
“There’s an old bell tower next to a defunct
textile mill on the other side of the river,” Jinji said.
“He rebuilt it after the fire. Locals say it’s filled with
clocks that run backward.”
Henry squinted. “How symbolic.”
They followed the crowd out onto a mezzanine.
Across a tiled wall, a giant projection flashed
between Portuguese and English:
CHEGA DE FINGIR / PRETEND NO MORE.
