The Truth About Lying
Aimee smiled weakly at the camera.
Her mother kissed her hand.
“This little girl is alive,” the surgeon said, “because the truth could not stay hidden.”
No one in the monitoring room spoke.
On another screen, the markets were frozen.
On this one, a child was alive.
Henry felt the argument inside him split cleanly in two.
Jinji came to stand beside him.
“That’s why we built it,” she said.
Henry looked back at the trading floor.
A man in a suit sat on the floor beside his terminal, shaking.
“That too,” he said.
His phone buzzed.
Not a number he recognized. Not a normal message. White text on a black screen.
ASSESSMENT PROTOCOL ACTIVE OBSERVATION PHASE: 72 HOURS REMAINING CONTINUE CURRENT OPERATIONS
Henry stared at it.
The room kept moving around him. Calls. orders. legal questions. emergency language. People trying to restart a world that had paused in the middle of a sentence.
