Divine Spark Rising
Carolina leapt the first gap. Henry followed,
gravel skidding under his boots. Jinji barely caught
the ledge.
Behind them, three pursuers spread wide,
herding them toward the far side. Henry realized
too late: they weren’t chasing, they were steering.
“Keep moving!” Carolina barked.
Through laundry lines, under flapping sheets,
they vaulted another gap. A pursuer landed behind
them with a metallic clang, the roof groaning under
his weight.
“Down there!” Carolina pointed.
They dropped through an archway into a
crowded courtyard. The noise of the market
swallowed them whole.
Henry bent over, lungs burning. “We just turned
every roof in Jerusalem into a hunting ground.”
Across the square, a man in a light suit lowered
his phone, slipped it into his pocket, and blended
into the press of bodies. Sunlight caught a silver pin
on his lapel: a circle split by a single line.
A broken spiral. Chorus’s mark.
Henry looked away quickly, but the image
seared into him.
