The Truth About Lying
Henry laughed. A real laugh this time. "You know what's funny? I spent my whole career avoiding the truth. Now I can't escape it."
"That's called karma," Vincent said. "Or divine justice. Take your pick."
"I'll take karma. It's less judgmental."
They spent the week preparing. Jinji compiled evidence. Vincent worked on the moral argument. Claire helped Henry practice his testimony.
"They're going to ask you if you regret it," she said. "What are you going to say?"
"The truth. That I regret the pain we've caused. But I don't regret revealing the lies."
"That's not going to satisfy them."
"I know. But it's all I have."
The night before the hearing, Henry couldn't sleep. He walked through the city, watching people try to live with it. Some were using Verax. Some were avoiding it. All were trying to navigate a world that had suddenly become much more complicated.
He ended up at the soup kitchen. Vincent was there, serving late-night meals to people who had nowhere else to go.
"Couldn't sleep?" Vincent asked. 84
