Vincent bowed his head.
Whether he was praying or bracing himself, Henry couldn’t tell.
Then Henry’s phone buzzed again.
A text from an unknown number.
You wanted truth? Here it is. My father lost his retirement today. Forty-three years of work. Gone. He did nothing wrong.
A second message followed.
Was it worth it?
Henry stared at the screen.
His thumb hovered over the keyboard.
The answer that came first was yes.
The answer that came next was I don’t know. He typed neither.
Across the room, Jinji said, “Phase three begins now.” Henry looked at the little patch on the table.
The world had started telling the truth.
And already it sounded like screaming.
