 The Truth About Lying
A pension manager told retirees their savings were safe.
He collapsed before he finished the word safe.
The clips spread faster than any campaign Henry had ever built.
Truth had become a spectacle. A punishment.
A drug.
His phone rang.
Unknown number.
“Henry Talbot.”
“Mr. Talbot, this is Senator Patricia Holbrook. I’m calling to inform you that you’re under investigation for financial terrorism, unauthorized access to private systems, and conspiracy to commit economic sabotage.”
Henry closed his eyes.
“I didn’t hack anything, Senator.”
“No. You just built the bonfire and handed matches to the arsonist.”
“The bank was committing fraud.”
“And now millions of people are poorer.”
“They were already poorer. They just didn’t know it.” “That sentence will sound wonderful at your trial.” The line went dead.
Henry stood very still.
Claire looked at him. “What?”
“They’re coming.”
