sin. So, it means, ‘If so, it would be better for him to have
a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned
in the depths of the sea. Namely, it is better to kill your life
than to send the soul to hell.’ By speaking a paradoxical
statement that it was better than sending someone to hell,
Jesus intended to make His disciples listen carefully and
seriously the words of Jesus.
So what He said ‘one of these little ones’ was an ex-
pression that included those who are like the little child
as well as all the disciples. The disciples were arguing
with each other for getting the high positions, that was,
they were quarreling with the things of fleshly lust, so it
meant that it would be a thing that would cause them to
sin between each other. He said to His disciples who was
asking about who was the greatest, in order to emphasize
this: ‘Therefore, if anyone causes one of these little ones
who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to
have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be
drowned in the depths of the sea. If you argue about who
is the greatest to take the world’s things, and if you incite
the other disciple’s heart to hold on to the things that the
instinct wants to do, it is the thing that you cause oth-
ers to sin. If so, it would be better for him to have a large
