26, “From others,” Peter answered. “then the sons are
exempt,” Jesus said to him. Dear friend! Do you think the

king of the earth, the owner of the country, charges a tax
on his son? Or does he charge it to others? It is that he im-

poses on others. It doesn’t need to impose a tax on his son.
If it is the king’s country, it is because also it will be the

country of his son. Like this, Jesus Himself, who has come
as the Son of God, is the ransom of life and is the temple,

so there is no reason to pay the temple tax. So, if the
people who collected the temple tax would have known

this true meaning of ‘the ransom of life’ and have recog-
nized Jesus, they could not have asked ‘why doesn’t He pay

the temple tax?’ because the One who would become ‘the

ransom of life’ came. That is why Jesus was a stranger to
them. The disciples were also strangers to them.

So, it says in verse 27, “But so that we may not of-
fend them, go to the lake and throw out your line. take the

first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-
drachma coin. take it and give it to them for my tax and
yours.” If Jesus had said like this, ‘I am the Son of God

and I have come as the ransom of life, so how can you say

that I have to pay the temple tax? Don’t you even know
that?’, they would not have accepted as it was. Rather, be-

cause they thought that Jesus tried to violate the law and
