Love and selfishness collided that day in the
Garden of Eden. When God created man, He
gave him perfect freedom to choose. If he
chose to obey he could, and if he chose to
disobey, he could do that too. For neither God
nor Satan can do any work without first
obtaining man’s consent.
Adam chose the way
of selfishness. He
chose to disobey,
and because of his
sin our natures are
fallen, and we cannot
make ourselves
righteous. We have
no righteousness of
our own with which to meet the claims of
God’s law. We have lost our humility. The
love of self destroyed our peace. Thus, we
have an identity crisis. Our identity has been
stolen! We became subjects of “the thief”
who came “to steal, and to kill, and to
destroy” (John 10:10). This is the setting for
our beginnings.
