               As a system of pretended communication with


               the dead, Spiritualism is as old, at least, as the


               Mosaic  dispensation,  for  it  was  strictly


               forbidden in his day; and it has at favorable


               epochs manifested itself among men; but its


               wonder-working phase is peculiar to modern


               times,  and  first  manifested  itself  in  this
