The history of the fifth trumpet is another

exemplification of this fact.

The barbarian hordes had spent their strength

in the overthrow of the Western Empire, and

had, in the course of a few years, laid aside

their savage ways, and assumed the manners

of the conquered people with whom they

lived. But the Eastern Empire was as full of

weakness and pollution as the Western, and

its downfall was just as certain, although it
