Gladstone, had given their voice against the
opening of museums, etc., on Sunday. The
same policy is enforced by some, at least, of
the English in their dependencies. One of the
first acts of the Marquis of Ripon, who was
made viceroy of India in 1880, was, according
to the Christian Weekly, to issue an order
forbidding official work of any kind on
Sunday.
In France the question is also agitated. The
senate having occasion to consider some
proposed changes in the Sunday laws, an
eminent senator, M. Barthélemy Saint Hilaire,
according to the French journal, Le
Christianisme au 19e Siècle, of June 11, 1880,
opened the eyes of his hearers by clear
argument showing that the seventh day, and
not the first day, is the Sabbath of the Bible.
