PROLOGUE
Prologue
Many of my family and friends have encouraged me to write my life story. They tell me they would find it interesting to learn about the many things I have done in my working and social life up to date.
Well here goes! I hope my story lives up to your expectations.
To all my family and friends, my work colleagues, my sporting partners and opponents this is for you! If I’ve left you out, forgotten an important story or event, you have to forgive me but it’s impossible to cram 80+ years into one little autobiography.
If my recollection of the facts is a bit different to yours, we will have to agree to disagree. As I say, it’s better to be VAGUELY RIGHT THAN POSITIVELY WRONG!
I have had, thank God, an amazing life and working career. I have been fortunate to have a truly loving, competitive and vibrant family; a family that has always had the peculiar Daly sense of humour. I have encountered and worked with people from many walks of life, in many countries, before I called Australia home in 1980. I think I have had more opportunities than most in life, some self-made and others by simply being in the right place at the right time. I have also been fortunate in surrounding myself with people who have made it happen.
To all of you, and to anyone curious enough to pick up this autobiography, I hope not just to tell you a lot of stories (avoiding any potential actions for defamation along the way) but more importantly to share with you my thoughts and beliefs about what brings success and what do we really mean by success?
My career all started in South Africa, when I was first recognised by senior management as the person to go to if there were problems or things to do. I revelled in tackling these challenges and the
