ability to try and climb the ladder to top management. Then there was the second stage, the unexpected transfer to Australia and the opportunity to become the CEO and for the first time to show my ability to exploit weaknesses and turn them into positives.
I set about a deliberate programme to raise my profile and I was soon invited to join the Board of the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) and eventually became the President for two years from 1986/1987. On my retirement from Norwich Winterthur In 1991 I was appointed the Managing Director and CEO of ICA.
Once I was CEO of ICA, my involvement in the insurance industry grew and I changed the role and focus of the organisation and its profile.. I engaged people such as Alan Mason and Terry McMullan including a new role for Philip Maguire to push the industry into a new era.
The next major change to emerge was the growth of the consumer movement and its attention on the insurance industry. This led to the first dispute resolution bodies and codes of practice being established by ICA as we started to develop a better understanding amongst the community. We set up the predecessors to the Financial Ombudsman Service which was established of the Financial Ombudsman in 2008 and which I had the pleasure to Chair.
I owe much to those who assisted me to meet these opportunities and challenges and to grow the industry and show how the industry contributes towards the Australian economy and the community.
While this was all good news, you will also read about some of my disappointments including the result of the negotiations and court battles to acquire CIC which became a defining moment in my career. There were numerous other setbacks during my long career, opportunities that I thought I would achieve and for one reason or another did not materialise. The formation of the Ombudsman Schemes in the early years leading to the establishment of FOS, were certainly a painstaking exercise. Another disappointment has
