PROLOGUE
been our lack of success (so far) in establishing a Financial Services Compensation Scheme.
We are now in the midst of a Royal Commission into the industry and it will be interesting to see if it deals with this subject.
Being successful doesn’t mean being the best at everything. I have met many brilliant people in their different fields including sports, but for me success has meant building and leading the team and getting the best results from and for everyone.
I think I can safely say that I’ve had a very successful working life. I started work in the insurance industry 65 years ago and I’m still going strong today.
I have always strived for success in everything else that I do; whether that has been in my working career, sport, charitable work, social events or trying to help family and friends themselves succeed in their goals.
To the younger members of the family I want to add that the world is one of many wonderful opportunities. If you want to succeed you have to chase your dreams, work hard, don’t believe people who say that things can’t be done and be innovative. Try new things all the time, be willing to make mistakes and move on. Work is only ever boring if you let it be.
On my 80th birthday family and friends produced a wonderful book of letters, photos and memories. In the book Peter, (who dislikes being called junior), listed three of my favourite sayings which are:
Be Reasonable and Do It My Way;
• Maak Nie Saak Nie ; and
• It’s Better to be Vaguely Right than Positively Wrong.
I have chosen the first of these as the title for my autobiography. The three things in life which have always been the most important
